The Michigan Daily
Arts E-Magazines
When our newspaper staff faced budget cuts forcing us to stop printing two of our weekly print inserts, I created prototypes of a digital version to keep the projects alive

Problem
Solution
For the past decade, The Michigan Daily staff has been printing The B-Side and The Statement, two arts and music magazine inserts. When we received word of the budget cuts eliminating these products from print, our arts staff was left with the loss of their largest projects and the prospect of having to tell the illustrators and writers that there was no longer a designated place for their work to be published.
I volunteered to create a wireframe and eventually a prototype of a digital execution of the magazines. They would essentially serve as a large-scale content teaser, with links directing back to the content on our main website to boost digital advertising revenue. The product was designed to heavily feature illustrations and work with a wide variety of color schemes, to allow the arts staff to tell a story through that week's theme.
Result
Our staff decided to adopt the idea for both magazines, and it allowed the arts staff the freedom to customize the visual appearance to match each week's theme as they used to do in print. Had they been fully housed on our main website, they would not have had this flexibility and would have lost a large part of their storytelling ability.
